MAJOR EVENTS

TO CO-INCIDE

ATTRACTIONS TO VISIT IN & AROUND THE HENLEY-ON-THAMES AREA

Meadows Farm is a working small holding.  It is a ‘special permission’ site and own sanitation is essential.  Rubbish and chemical toilet disposal is available on site.  It is a minimum facilities site.  Advance booking is not necessary as ample space is available for all types of unit.  Dogs must be kept on a lead at all times on site.  Five miles per hour must be observed at all times both on site and through the whole of the farm property.

The Holiday Meet has been planned to co-incide with both the Henley-on Thames Royal Regatta and Henley-on-Thames Festival.  Both are acclaimed events.

It is hoped to have a small marquee on site where opportunities to get together will be available during the holiday meet.  A wide range of information about local attractions and services and details of any planned on-site activities will be available in our marquee throughout the meet.

The Thames is adjacent to the Meadows Farm site.  Whilst direct access onto the Thames towpath from the site is not possible, access to the Thames is only a short walk away, about a third of a mile.  Many other attractive opportunities to walk are also available.

Our Holiday Meet enjoys excellent public transport links nearby.  Previous members attending the meet have commented very positively on the ease of movement to a wide range of towns and attractions.  M25, M4, M40 and mainline rail and busses are all nearby for easy access to places in and around Henley, Reading and London.  The nearest bus stop is within about 100 metres of the site entrance and the main line rail station is in the centre of Henley.  So why not take the opportunity to let the bus and train take the strain and leave your vehicle on site.  Train and bus timetables will be available on site.

As with all Royal County of Berkshire DA meets, we hold a Sunday coffee morning.  However, our Holiday Meet coffee morning has a reputation far and wide.  If you haven’t sampled this now’s your chance.

A range of regalia will be available for you to purchase on site.

If you are not already a member of the Camping and Caravanning Club you can join on site and enjoy immediately the full range of advantages that Camping and Caravanning Club membership brings.

A warm welcome awaits you at Henley-on-Thames and we look forward to meeting friends old and new.

Your stewards throughout the Holiday Meet are Dave and Ann Ellis and Bob and Trish Bennett.  Dave and Ann can be contacted until the end of June on 0118 9816395 and thereafter on 07771 927849.  Bob and Trish can be contacted until the end of June on 0118 9751170 and thereafter on 07799146615.

The Meadows Farm Holiday Meet opens at 12 noon on Wednesday 27th June 2012 at midday.  Please do not arrive before this time.

Meadows Farm, Marlow Road, Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire, RG9 3AA can be found half a mile to the north of Henley-on-Thames.  From Henley, follow the A4155 north towards Marlow.  You will pass Henley Rugby Club Ground and Swiss Farm Caravan Site on the left hand side before reaching Meadow Farm on the right hand side.  From the M40 and Marlow, follow the A4155 south towards Henley-on-Thames.  The site will be found on the left just after Fawley Court College.  Royal County of Berkshire DA signs will be prominently displayed to enable you to find Meadows Farm.

Site fees are £8.50 per unit night (including two adults and children). Additional adults are charged at £3.00 per night.

The Meadows Farm Holiday Meet closes at 12 noon on Monday 9th July 2012 at midday.

Two main events run alongside our Royal County of Berkshire DA Holiday Meet – the Royal Regatta and Henley-on-Thames Festival.  Both are highly acclaimed events.  You can of course purchase tickets to both of these events, follow the separate links which take you to their websites for further information about these.

Meadows Farm is adjacent to the regatta course.  However direct access from the site to this and the towpath is not available for Club members.  However, it only a short walk to the towpath and Regatta Meadows to reach good viewing points of the event and races.  Some of the photos in our gallery have been taken from just such positions.

The Royal Regatta is a quintessentially English rowing event.  The Regatta event attracts crews from around the world to compete in this prestigious event.  Given the nature of this activity, many of the crews are from the younger generation, being the only ones with the energy to withstand four days of competitive rowing.  Evening entertainment is laid on for them and this can generate some noise during the evening.  It is tradition for the spectators to dress for the occasion throughout the day, following long held dress conventions.  Their blazer colours and finery can be a sight to behold, especially with wellies and umbrellas when the weather is wet.  So why not bring along your best dress, boater and blazer and enter into the spirit of the event and the ambience around the town.

The following week sees the same Regatta Meadows hosting the Festival.  Whilst some of the staging faces towards the opposite bank, much of the music can be heard from our holiday site location.  During Saturday the Festival moves into the town centre with a range of street entertainment.  Previously these have included stilt walkers, mime artists and other interesting events and displays.  During the afternoon the Festival Site is open free of charge to the public.

This year there are likely to be fireworks during these events and these are in close proximity to the site.  These create a dramatic climax to accompany the already spectacular sights and sounds of these events.

Henley on Thames is also the home of the River & Rowing Museum which celebrates the international sport of rowing, the River Thames and the town of Henley-on-Thames. This award winning Museum is set in parkland adjacent to the river and is also the home of Ratty, Mole, Badger and Mr Toad at the enchanting Wind in the Willows exhibition.       http://www.rrm.co.uk/

The Thames meanders its way through the region and there are many charming towns and villages to see.  Windsor and its’ world famous Castle are major tourist attractions alongside the Thames, together with neighbouring Eton.  The Castle was originally built by William the Conqueror and has been enlarged and rebuilt by successive monarchs ever since and is now the largest inhabited castle in the world.  The historic town of Eton stands on the north bank, with its famous school founded in 1440.

Slightly further down the Thames are the historic and tranquil riverside meadows of Runnymede where King John sealed the Magna Carta in 1215.  The American constitution is based on this charter and to commemorate it, a memorial overlooking the meadows was erected in 1957 by the American Bar Association.  There are also memorials to John F. Kennedy and the Commonwealth Air Forces.  Picnics and generally enjoying the river are popular activities here.

There are many attractive villages along the Thames that deserve a visit.  One of the most popular is Cookham, closely associated with the artist Sir Stanley Spencer who lived in the village until his death in 1959, and who used the red brick cottages facing the village green, together with other village scenes, in his paintings.  The river also inspired another famous resident, Kenneth Grahame, author of The Wind in the Willows.  Every July the river plays host to the colourful ceremony of Swan Upping, where the Royal Swan Keeper counts and marks all of the cygnets on the Thames.  Other riverside locations nearby worth a visit are Marlow, Bray, Bourne End, Hurley, Datchet, Shiplake, Sonning and Pangbourne.

Once the home of the Astor family and the hub of high society, nearby Cliveden is infamously associated with the Profumo Affair.  The house was designed by Sir Charles Barry, architect of the Houses of Parliament, and is now run as a private hotel.  The magnificent grounds overlooking the Thames are open to the public and contain a series of formal gardens plus riverside and woodland walks.  Boulter’s Lock, between Cliveden and Maidenhead, is a beauty spot which retains much of the 19th century atmosphere described in Jerome K Jerome’s Three Men in a Boat.

Another big attraction is Legoland where well over 50 million Lego bricks have been used to recreate famous European and American places.

The world’s oldest model village, Bekonscot, is in Beaconsfield, just north of the M40.  This miniature kingdom was created in 1929 by Roland Callingham and has been added to ever since.  However, it still portrays rural England as it was in the 1930’s.  There is a miniature replica of Enid Blyton’s house, ‘Green Hedges’.  The famous children’s author moved to Beaconsfield in 1938 and it was here that she wrote some of her most popular books including the Famous Five and Secret Seven series.

Other places of interest are John Milton’s cottage in Chalfont St Giles which is now a museum and is where he completed Paradise Lost.  Also Burnham Beeches, Greys Court (NT),Dorneywood Garden (NT) are nearby.

Many other interesting towns are within easy reach, including Marlow, High Wycombe, Reading and Oxford.
